Dental implants, built to last
A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw to support a crown, for Richmond adults replacing one or more missing teeth after an assessment.
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium or zirconia post placed into the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over several months the bone bonds to the implant, and a custom crown is then attached to it to replace the visible tooth.
Implants can replace a single tooth, support a bridge, or stabilise a denture. Suitability depends on your general health, the amount and quality of bone, gum health and habits such as smoking, which we assess with an examination and 3D imaging.
Who is it for?
- Adults missing one or more teeth
- People with a loose or uncomfortable denture who want more stability
- Patients with enough healthy jawbone, or who are suitable for bone grafting
- Those who prefer not to prepare neighbouring teeth for a bridge
What to expect
- 01
Assessment and 3D scan
We review your health history, examine the area and take a 3D cone beam scan to plan the implant position.
- 02
Implant placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most patients describe the procedure as more comfortable than they expected.
- 03
Healing period
The bone integrates with the implant over roughly three to six months, and a temporary tooth may be worn in the meantime.
- 04
Fitting the crown
A digital scan is taken and a custom crown is made and fitted, matched to your neighbouring teeth.
How do I care for a dental implant?
Clean around your implant every day with a soft brush and interdental brushes or floss, just as you would a natural tooth. Avoid smoking, which raises the risk of implant failure. Regular check-ups let us monitor the gum and bone around the implant.
Common questions
From placement to final crown usually takes three to six months. It can take longer if bone grafting or an extraction is needed first.
