Check-ups that keep things simple

A check-up and clean is a routine exam, professional scale and polish, and X-rays when needed, for adults and children at our Richmond studio.

What happens at a dental check-up and clean?

A dental check-up is a full examination of your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues. The dentist looks for early signs of decay, gum disease, worn fillings and changes that need watching, and takes X-rays when they are clinically useful.

A professional clean removes hardened plaque, called calculus or tartar, that brushing and flossing cannot shift. Most people are advised to have a check-up and clean every six to twelve months, depending on their gum health and risk of decay.

What to expect

  1. 01

    A quick catch-up

We ask about your health, medications and any concerns before we look at anything.

  2. 02

    Examination and X-rays

The dentist checks each tooth, your gums and soft tissues. X-rays are taken only when they add useful information.

  3. 03

    Scale and polish

Tartar and staining are removed with fine instruments and an ultrasonic scaler, then the teeth are polished smooth.

  4. 04

    A plan you can read

You leave knowing what we found, what can wait and when your next visit is due, with fees explained up front.

How should I look after my teeth between visits?

Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes. Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals. Your gums may feel slightly tender for a day after a clean, which is normal.

Common questions
