What counts as a dental emergency?
-
Severe or throbbing toothache
Pain that keeps you awake or does not settle with over-the-counter pain relief.
-
A knocked-out adult tooth
Time matters. Call immediately; the best chance of saving it is within the hour.
-
A broken or cracked tooth
Sharp edges, pain on biting, or a large piece missing.
-
Swelling in the face or gum
Often a sign of infection that needs prompt treatment.
-
A lost filling or crown
Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side and call us to recement or replace it.
What should I do right now?
- 01
Knocked-out tooth
Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse briefly in milk if dirty, push it back into the socket if you can, or keep it in milk, and call us straight away.
- 02
Broken tooth
Rinse with warm water, keep any pieces, and use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling.
- 03
Toothache
Rinse with warm salty water, floss gently around the tooth and take pain relief as directed on the pack. Do not put aspirin on the gum.
When to call 000
Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department if you have facial swelling that affects your breathing, swallowing or vision, bleeding that will not stop with pressure, or a facial injury with a possible head injury.
Common questions
