Crowns and bridges, made to measure

A crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth and a bridge replaces a missing tooth, for Richmond patients needing strength, function and a natural look.

What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It protects teeth that are cracked, heavily filled, badly worn or have had root canal treatment, and restores their shape and strength.

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Both are usually made from ceramic materials chosen to match the colour and translucency of your natural teeth.

Who is it for?

  • Teeth that are cracked, broken or have large old fillings
  • Back teeth after root canal treatment
  • A gap from a missing tooth where the neighbouring teeth would benefit from crowns
  • Worn or discoloured teeth that need more strength than a filling can give

What to expect

  1. 01

    Examination

We check the tooth and surrounding gum and take X-rays to confirm a crown or bridge is the right option.

  2. 02

    Preparation and scan

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthetic and a digital scan is taken. A temporary crown protects it in the meantime.

  3. 03

    Making the restoration

Your crown or bridge is made from ceramic and matched to the shade of your surrounding teeth.

  4. 04

    Fitting

At the second visit we check the fit, bite and colour, then cement it permanently.

How do I look after a crown or bridge?

Brush twice daily and clean carefully at the gumline. For a bridge, use a floss threader or interdental brush to clean under the false tooth. Avoid chewing very hard foods or ice, and keep up regular check-ups.

Common questions

Many crowns last 10 to 15 years or more with good care. Grinding, decay at the edges and gum recession can shorten their life.
