Emergency care, same day

Emergency dentistry is prompt care for severe toothache, broken teeth, swelling or a knocked-out tooth. Call our Richmond studio first and we will advise you.

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is a problem that needs prompt care to relieve pain, control infection or save a tooth. Common examples are severe toothache, a broken or cracked tooth, a lost filling or crown, a knocked-out adult tooth and swelling in the gum or face.

Please call the clinic first so we can advise you and hold a time. Call 000 or go to a hospital emergency department straight away for facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, or dental trauma with a head injury.

Who is it for?

  • Severe or throbbing toothache that stops you sleeping
  • A chipped, cracked or broken tooth
  • A knocked-out or loosened adult tooth
  • A lost filling or crown, or swelling in the gum

What to expect

  1. 01

    Call us first

Phone the clinic and describe what has happened. We give you first-aid advice and the earliest available time.

  2. 02

    Assessment

The dentist examines the area and takes an X-ray if needed to find the cause of the problem.

  3. 03

    Relief and stabilising

We focus on easing pain and controlling infection, which may mean a temporary filling, dressing or splint.

  4. 04

    Next steps

If further treatment is needed, we explain the options and fees and book a follow-up visit.

What should I do after emergency dental treatment?

Follow the specific instructions you are given, take pain relief as directed and avoid chewing on the treated side until it settles. If swelling spreads, you develop a fever or the pain gets worse, call us. Return for any follow-up so the temporary fix can be completed properly.

Common questions

Pick it up by the crown, not the root, rinse briefly in milk if it is dirty and, if you can, gently put it back in its socket. Otherwise keep it in milk and call us immediately, as time matters.
